Embracing a Positive Digital Culture

A Care Leaver’s Journey to Belonging in a Digital World

Hey, you! Yes, you, the one scrolling through—let me grab your attention for a moment. I’ve got a story to share, one that’s close to my heart and speaks to the power of embracing a positive digital culture. Today, I’m talking about how digital spaces became my bridge to belonging, and how, as a care leaver, I navigated the highs and lows of integrating into society with the help of technology. Ready to dive in?

"Digital spaces are like doors—you just need the key to open them. But what if you don’t have the key?"

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, like many others, I found myself relying on digital tools to stay connected. Whether it was online classes, workshops, or watching YouTube tutorials to complete assignments in my aftercare facility, the digital world was for me the only source that kept me connected with the loved ones, stay updated etc. It felt empowering! Social workers were there to guide me, and I could always count on their support whenever I felt lost in the digital maze.

But when the pandemic dust settled and I stepped into the working world, I quickly realized that navigating the digital culture at work was a whole new ball game. There were no social workers holding my hand. It was just me and the screen.

"Let me tell you—facing the digital workplace without a support group felt like trying to build a bridge while standing in midair."

For many care leavers, stepping out of a protective environment with no support systems filled with unexpected challenges. The struggle is real, my friends! Imagine starting your first job but not having a decent laptop or phone to join that important Zoom meeting. Or sitting there, anxious about whether your patchy internet connection will hold out for that crucial presentation. The world expects us to be tech-savvy, but not everyone knows the silent battle we fight just to show up.

"How can I belong in a world that demands digital perfection when I don’t even have the right tools?"

Let's not forget about data. Oh, the data struggle! Some workplaces provide Wi-Fi, sure. But for many care leavers in entry-level jobs, we stretch every last bit of personal data just to stay connected after hours. It’s a juggling act—balancing the cost of living with the cost of staying digitally relevant. And the weight of not being able to access information, resources, or opportunities like everyone else can sometimes feel crushing.

But let me share something real with you:) We care leavers are resilient. Even when the devices are slow, the Wi-Fi is weaker than our willpower, and the struggle feels never-ending, we rise. We don’t just adapt to di0gital culture, we fight for our place in it.

"Each time I power through a digital obstacle, I remind myself—I belong here. And so do you." - a young care leaver

Some organizations are finally waking up to our needs, providing mentorship, and technical training, understanding that it’s not just about getting a job—it’s about thriving in a digital world that often leaves us behind.

But here’s the truth, we’re not asking for handouts. We’re asking for fair and equitable shots. Access to the same tools, the same data, the same training that others take for granted. Because once we have that, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

So, the next time you think about digital culture, remember, it’s not just about technology. It’s about belonging. It’s about making sure every care leaver has the chance to open that digital door, step inside, and say, “I’m here, and I’m ready.”

We belong in the digital world. And trust me, you’ll want to be a part of our journey
